Upper Endoscopy Prep Instructions

Please read these instructions carefully and in their entirety at least one week before your procedure.

Arrival Time

1 Hour Prior to Your Procedure

Total time at the center is approximately 2-3 hours.

What to Bring

  • Insurance card(s)
  • Photo ID
  • Adult driver (18+)

No taxis. No jewelry or body piercings.

Cancellation Policy

If you wish to cancel your appointment, please call the office 5 business days before your procedure to avoid getting a fee.

Important Information About Medications

Do NOT Take

  • • Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin
  • • Fish Oil, Vitamin E
  • • Coumadin or similar blood thinners
  • • For 7 days before the test
  • No smoking for 12 hours before
  • No vaping or marijuana for 24 hours
  • Nothing by mouth 4 hours before

You CAN Take

  • Tylenol if needed
  • • AM medications 4 hours before with sips of water
  • Zyrtec or Claritin 4 hours before for seasonal allergies
  • • If diabetic, please inform the staff
  • • If on blood thinners, your doctor needs to know so they can be stopped if indicated

Upper Endoscopy Preparation

Eating and drinking guidelines based on your scheduled procedure time

AM

AM Procedure

Patients scheduled in the AM may not eat or drink after midnight the night before.

12-3

12 PM – 3 PM Procedure

Patients scheduled after 12 noon but before 3 PM may have clear liquids (water, black tea, coffee, apple juice) up to 4 hours before endoscopy but not after that.

PM

After 3 PM Procedure

Patients scheduled after 3 PM may have solid food no later than 12 hours before the endoscopy and clear liquids up to 4 hours before the endoscopy.

DM

Diabetic Patients

If diabetic, please eat any solid food or milk products at least 10 hours before the endoscopy and clear liquids 4 hours before endoscopy.

If you have food or drinks in your stomach, you are at high risk for aspiration.

Patient Responsibility

It is your responsibility to let Dr. Amber Khan's office know of any changes or updates to your medical history or medications at least one week prior to your procedure.

This includes but is not limited to: new medications prescribed, any new heart or lung symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath), or hospital admissions.
